Principles for effective AI

There's no shortage of AI hype. Here's how I cut through it, and how I decide what's genuinely worth building for you.

AI can deliver real, lasting value — but only when it's applied with judgment. A lot of what's sold as "AI transformation" either reinvents something ordinary software already did better, or ships an impressive demo that quietly falls apart in production. These are the principles I work by, so that whatever I build for you actually earns its place.

01

Know when not to use AI

The tech industry acts like AI belongs in everything. It doesn't. Plenty of integrations and customizations are faster, cheaper, and more reliable as plain, well-built code with no model involved. I reach for AI only where it genuinely beats the alternative — and I'll tell you when it doesn't, even if it's the thing you came in asking for.

02

No generic slop

Everyone can access the same AI models, so, on its own, AI produces the same generic, off-brand output everyone else gets. The value is in grounding it in what's actually yours — your voice, your data, and the way your operation really runs. I build on your own material, so what comes out sounds like you and reflects how you work.

03

Set honest expectations

AI can't do everything, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. But designed well, it can reliably take on the repetitive, time-sink work — getting you 80% of the way there. I'm clear about where that line falls before I build, so you know exactly what AI can do and what still needs a person.

04

Keep a human in the loop

The best systems I build automate everything they safely can, then bring a person in at the moments that matter: the final review, the edge cases, the sign-off. AI proposes; people decide. That's how you get the speed of automation without giving up quality or control.

05

Value over hype

I'm not going to build you something "agentic" just so we can both use the word. I start from how your operation actually works, then target the places where AI or automation will pay off in your day-to-day. A system that quietly earns its keep running in the background always beats a flashy product that impresses people once, but then gets abandoned.

Not sure where AI actually fits?
